Two Parks, One Day — How to Structure It
Funtown Splashtown USA in Saco, Maine is two separate experiences joined by a combination bracelet. Funtown USA is the traditional amusement park side: coasters, a log flume, go-karts, a carousel. Splashtown USA is the water park: 16 slides, a wave pool area, and Pirate's Paradise for younger kids. You can move between them freely with a combination bracelet, and that flexibility is the key to a good family day.
The smartest family strategy is: start in Funtown USA when the park opens at roughly 10:30 AM, hit the big rides before lines build, then transition to Splashtown after lunch when the sun is highest and the water feels most worth it. Lines in the water park peak around 1–2 PM, so if you have young kids who nap, this timing also aligns with a break back at the car.

Best Rides by Age Group
Toddlers (Under 38 Inches)
Kids under 38 inches are admitted free and have a solid lineup of their own:
- Kiddie Boats, Kiddie Cars, Kiddie Swings — the classic low-key rides that every toddler in the history of toddlers has loved
- Red Baron — airplane cars that go in circles; endlessly repeatable for the 3-and-under crowd
- Frog Hopper — a gentle up-and-down ride that feels exciting without any real intensity
- Classic Carousel — beautifully maintained, works for every age
- Pirate's Paradise (Splashtown) — the multi-level interactive water playground is the best thing in the park for this age group; the 500-gallon dump bucket is a centerpiece moment kids will talk about for years
- Family Fun Lagoon — wading area with gentle water features; zero stress for parents
Kids 38–47 Inches
Once a child hits 38 inches they unlock a meaningful jump in options, especially with a parent:
- Thunder Falls Log Flume — New England's longest and tallest log flume; you WILL get soaked, bring a change of clothes or fully commit to being wet. Kids this age tend to love it.
- Cactus Canyon Canoes — paddle-around water ride with mild splashing
- Antique Cars — slow, charming car ride through the park; great for kids who want to "drive"
- Flying Trapeze — spinning ride that feels fast without actually being fast
- Liquid Lightning Tube Slide (Splashtown) — 38 inches to go alone; younger kids under 38 can ride the double tube with an adult 48+
- Mammoth Thrill Slide — 42-inch minimum on the raft ride; a genuine highlight for this age group
Kids 48 Inches and Up / Tweens
At 48 inches, the park opens fully:
- Excalibur — Maine's only wooden roller coaster and the best ride in the park for coaster fans. The wooded setting makes it feel bigger than the stats on paper. First coaster for many Maine kids.
- Dragon's Descent — 220-foot turbo drop tower; the tallest attraction in Northern New England. Expect a line.
- Whispering Pines Haunted Hotel — dark ride through 14 themed rooms; interactive curse-eradicator gun makes it engaging for tweens. Opened in 2023, earned national recognition in USA Today's 10Best awards.
- Astrosphere — dome scrambler with a laser light show and ELO's "Fire On High"; legitimately unique
- Tornado and Water Coaster (Splashtown) — the big-ticket water rides that older kids will want to lap multiple times

What to Skip With Young Kids
Wild Mouse requires 52 inches solo (46 with adult) and has sharp, whip-style turns that can be rough on small riders even when they meet the height requirement. Save it for kids who already love coasters.
Dragon's Descent is intense. Even at 48 inches, some kids are not emotionally ready for a free-fall drop. Talk it through before you get in line — there is no "mild" version of this ride.
Amphitrite's Challenge Racing Slides require 42 inches and solo riding. Not dangerous, but the competitive racing setup means no parent alongside.

Nap and Rest Strategy
The park does not have a dedicated rest area inside, but the parking lot is free and easy to access. If you have toddlers who need a mid-day nap, returning to the car (or a nearby hotel) and coming back in the afternoon is completely viable. The 3 PM discounted admission is also an option if you want to return late-day for another round.
Shade is limited in Splashtown, so cabana rentals are worth considering for families with young kids who need a home base. There are only 18 cabanas, and they sell out — book online before your visit.

Character Meets and Kid Programming
Funtown Splashtown USA does not operate Disney-style character meet-and-greet experiences. The park's appeal is its rides and water attractions rather than IP-based entertainment. The Whispering Pines Haunted Hotel has original characters (the witch Lilith, the cat Katbattikus), but these exist within the ride — there is no character meet component outside of it.

Practical Family Logistics
- Parking is free — one less stress on a family budget day
- Outside food and drinks are permitted (no glass) — pack a cooler and save significantly on food costs
- Lockers are available near Duck Game in Funtown USA and near Pirate's Paradise in Splashtown — standard size runs around $12; bring a change of clothes if you plan to do both parks
- Sunscreen reapplication station — the water park sun exposure adds up fast; reapply every time you exit the water
- Arrive at opening — lines on Excalibur and Dragon's Descent are shortest in the first 90 minutes of the day
