The Park Is Bigger Than It Looks on the Map
Busch Gardens Tampa covers 335 acres. For families, that means long walks between areas — and a tired toddler two hours in is a predictable problem. Knowing where the kids' zones are and how to build your day around them matters more than the ride list.
The good news: the park genuinely accommodates families across a wide age range. Kids 5 and under get in free all year with Florida residency (Preschool Card). And the two dedicated kids areas — Sesame Street Safari of Fun and the newer Wild Oasis — are legitimately good, not just afterthoughts.
Best for Ages 2-5: Sesame Street Safari of Fun
This is a complete mini-park within the park. Your youngest kids can spend two or three hours here alone.
What's worth their time:
- Air Grover — Small coaster that kids this age treat like a big deal. Minimum 36" to ride solo, but companions are welcome.
- Elmo's Treehouse Trek — Multi-level climbing structure with slides. No height minimum. Drains energy fast.
- Cookie Monster's Cloud Bounce — Bounce house themed around Cookie Monster. Hit it early before it gets hot.
- Bert and Ernie's Loch Ness Adventure — Gentle splash ride. Very mild. Good for first-timers on water rides.
- Rosita's Djembe Fly Away — Small swinging ride. Maximum height 42", so older siblings can't join.
- Splash pad — Built into the area. Bring a change of clothes. Kids will want to stay here.
Character meets: Elmo, Cookie Monster, Abby Cadabby, and other Sesame Street characters make appearances in this area throughout the day. Check the daily schedule at Guest Relations for times — they're not posted at the area itself.
Sesame Street Show: A live show runs at the outdoor stage inside this area several times daily. Short, 10-15 minutes, and the kids who know the characters love it. Good excuse to sit down.
Best for Ages 5-9: Wild Oasis and the Crossover Rides
Wild Oasis (the revamped Jungala area) is built for this age group. It has:
- A multi-story climbing canopy with rope bridges and slides
- An interactive water play area (expect wet kids)
- A drop tower ride with special effects that kids in this range can actually ride
- A multi-species animal habitat woven into the structure
At this age, kids also start clearing the 42-inch line, which opens up:
- Cobra's Curse — The spinning element makes every ride different. Kids in this range almost universally love it.
- Phoenix Rising — At 42" minimum, this is often the first real coaster a 6-7 year old rides at Busch Gardens. The onboard sound effects and the gentle inversions (none are full loops) make it a perfect entry point.
- Stanley Falls Flume — Classic log flume. Hit it mid-afternoon when everyone's hot.
- Sand Serpent — Small mouse coaster in Pantopia. Great for kids ready to level up from kiddie rides.
Best for Ages 10+: The Full Coaster Lineup
Once kids clear 48 inches, the park opens up completely.
Start here:
- Cheetah Hunt — Triple-launch with no inversions at 48". It's fast and long (4,400 feet) and a great first big coaster.
- Montu — Seven inversions but a relatively smooth ride. Good second step up.
- Kumba — Rougher than Montu but still a classic. The roar from the loop is part of the experience.
At 54 inches, add:
- Phoenix Rising then Iron Gwazi — Do Iron Gwazi within the first 90 minutes. The line gets deep after 11am.
- SheiKra — The drop is the whole point. If your 10-year-old is nervous, let them watch from the bridge over the splash pond first.
- Falcon's Fury — Save this for late in the day. The face-down tilt before the drop unsettles some guests.
Nap and Rest Strategy
For families with kids under 6: plan for a midday break. The park has no quiet indoor space that doubles as a rest area, but the Myombe Reserve (great ape habitat) is air-conditioned, dim, and calm. It's inside and enclosed — legitimately restful if you need 20 minutes of cool air while the gorillas do their thing.
If you're staying at a nearby hotel, midday park exit and return is common and smart. The parking lot has a tram, but the walk from mid-lot can be long.
What to Skip With Young Kids
- Falcon's Fury — Not suitable for kids under 8-9 even if they clear 54". The face-down drop is psychologically intense.
- Iron Gwazi — Same. At 76 mph, it's a lot. Let kids work up to it.
- Howl-O-Scream — The seasonal Halloween event runs after 7pm and is explicitly adult-horror oriented. Not for young children.
Timing Advice
Arrival time matters more at Busch Gardens than most parks. The parking lot opens before the gates — get there by 9:30am for a 10am open. Ride Iron Gwazi and Phoenix Rising before 11am. Then pivot to Sesame Street or Wild Oasis through the midday heat. Ride water rides at 1-2pm. Finish with coasters again after 5pm when lines drop.
Weekdays are meaningfully less crowded than weekends. Tuesday through Thursday average 15-minute waits park-wide versus 30 minutes on Saturdays.
