Why Height Requirements Matter at Gilroy Gardens
Gilroy Gardens is one of the most kid-friendly parks in California, but it still has height requirements on most of its 40+ rides. Checking these before you arrive saves you from a meltdown at the loading platform. The park posts requirements at each ride entrance, but having the numbers in advance lets you know exactly which rides are in play for your group.
Note that requirements are set by manufacturers and enforced by ride operators. Bring a printed copy of this list and measure your kids the morning of your visit in shoes — some parks measure barefoot, but Gilroy Gardens typically measures in footwear so results can vary slightly.
Roller Coasters
Quicksilver Express Mine Coaster
- 42" to ride with a supervising companion
- 48" to ride alone
- This is the park's biggest coaster and the one most kids want to conquer. If your child is between 42" and 48", they need an adult in the seat with them.
Timber Twister
- 36" to ride with a supervising companion
- 36" to ride alone (accompanied by a supervising companion if under a certain age per operator discretion)
- Timber Twister is the park's junior coaster, a snake-themed ride that's a great first coaster for younger kids. The lower requirement makes it accessible to most kids 4 and up.
Thrill and Swing Rides
Banana Split
- 48" to ride
- This swinging ship ride shaped like a banana is deceivingly intense. The 48" cutoff is firm.
Artichoke Dip
- 36" to ride alone
- A spinning ride themed around an artichoke. Fun for smaller kids who've hit that 36" mark.
Mushroom Swing
- No height minimum listed for accompanied riders; check at the ride for current policy
- A swing ride with a mushroom canopy. Generally suitable for small children with an adult.
Carousel and Classic Rides
Claudia's Carousel
- No height requirement
- Open to all ages. Riders under a certain age must ride with an adult. This antique carousel from 1922 is a must for young kids.
Illions Supreme Carousel
- No height requirement for accompanied riders
- A 1927 vintage carousel. Kids ride horses; taller guests can use a chariot. Check at the attraction for the exact policy on unaccompanied riders.
Garlic Twirl
- No published minimum height; small children must ride with an adult
- Garlic-themed teacups-style spinner. Good for the littlest guests.
Train and Boat Rides
Bonfante Railroad
- No height requirement
- A 2-foot narrow-gauge train that circles the park perimeter. Ideal for all ages, including infants.
Rainbow Gardens Boats
- No height requirement for accompanied riders
- A relaxing raft-style ride through garden scenery. Low-intensity and great for small kids.
Paddle Boats
- Must be tall enough to reach pedals; typically an adult or older child must ride
- Duck-shaped pedal boats on Coyote Lake. Not a traditional height-requirement ride, but small kids need to ride with someone who can pedal.
Water Rides and Splash Areas
Lakeside Splash (water slides)
- Height requirements vary by slide; check at the entrance. Taller slides typically require 42"–48".
- Opened 2024. Features multiple slide options, so smaller kids will find slides they can access.
Water Oasis
- No height requirement
- Spray zones, tipping buckets, and shallow splash pools. Designed for the youngest guests.

Tips for Managing Height Requirements
- Measure your kids at home the morning of the visit. Wear the shoes they'll wear at the park.
- The park has a measurement station near the entrance. Use it before your kids are emotionally invested in a specific ride.
- Riders between 42" and 48" can ride Quicksilver with an adult — don't assume they're locked out.
- If a child doesn't meet a requirement, check Timber Twister at 36" first. It's a real coaster and usually satisfies the coaster itch.
- Height requirements are posted at each ride's entrance. When in doubt, check the sign before joining a line.
- The official Guest Assistance Guide (available at gilroygardens.org or at Guest Services inside the park) has the complete list including health restrictions.
