The Short Version
Animal Kingdom is the most height-restriction-friendly park at Walt Disney World. Of all the rides in the park, only three have a minimum height requirement. Everything else is open to all ages and sizes — including the two most immersive experiences in the park, Kilimanjaro Safaris and Na'vi River Journey.
This is genuinely great news for families with young kids, and it's something first-timers often don't realize until they're already in the park wondering why the height signs are so rare.
Rides with Height Requirements
Expedition Everest — Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
Minimum height: 44 inches (112 cm)
This is the park's roller coaster. It runs forward, then backward, passes a broken track segment in the dark, and features a large Yeti Audio-Animatronic. The height requirement is firm because the restraints need a certain body size to work safely. If your child is close to 44 inches, bring a measuring tape — the cast members at the ride entrance will check.
Avatar Flight of Passage
Minimum height: 44 inches (112 cm)
The most in-demand ride in the park and one of the best theme park attractions ever built. You sit on a banshee simulator and "fly" over the world of Pandora with wind, mist, and scents. It's intense in a sensory way — not rough or jerky — but the 44-inch requirement is about the physical fit of the bike-style seat and the restraint that clamps over your back. Guests with certain back or shoulder conditions sometimes find it uncomfortable regardless of height.
Kali River Rapids
Minimum height: 38 inches (97 cm)
A circular raft ride through a rapids course with waterfalls and water cannons. You will get wet — possibly soaked. The 38-inch requirement makes this the most accessible of the three restricted rides, and it's a good option for older toddlers and young kids who meet the mark. It's also seasonal, though Disney typically runs it through the warmer months.
Rides with No Height Requirement
Every other ride and major attraction in the park is open to all guests:
- Kilimanjaro Safaris — 18-minute open-air vehicle ride past free-roaming lions, elephants, giraffes, hippos, rhinos, zebras, and more. No height limit, universally loved.
- Na'vi River Journey — Slow, dark boat ride through the bioluminescent forest of Pandora. Zero intensity. Good for babies and toddlers.
- Wildlife Express Train — Narrated train ride to Rafiki's Planet Watch and Conservation Station.
- Festival of the Lion King — High-energy live stage show with acrobats, singers, and giant character floats.
- Finding Nemo: The Big Blue... and Beyond! — Theater show combining live performers, puppetry, and projection effects.
- Zootopia: Better Zoogether — New 3D show inside the Tree of Life Theater (opened November 2025). Guests wear CarrotVision glasses and it uses in-theater special effects.
- Feathered Friends in Flight — Free-flight bird show at the Asia Caravan Stage.
- Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail — Walking trail past gorillas, hippos, meerkats, naked mole rats, and more.
- Maharajah Jungle Trek — Self-guided trail in Asia featuring Sumatran tigers, Komodo dragons, giant fruit bats, and birds.
Note on DINOSAUR
If you're working from older planning guides, DINOSAUR permanently closed in February 2026. The ride was a dark, bumpy vehicle ride that previously had a 40-inch height requirement. The entire DinoLand U.S.A. area is being demolished and rebuilt as Tropical Americas, expected to open in 2027.
Rider Switch
For the three rides with height requirements, Disney offers Rider Switch. One adult rides while the other waits with the child who doesn't meet the height requirement. Then the adults swap without going back through the full queue. You request Rider Switch at the attraction entrance before your group enters.
Practical Tips
- Measure your kids at home the morning you go. Shoes add about half an inch.
- If your child is borderline at 44 inches, head to Flight of Passage or Expedition Everest first thing — you'll know immediately whether they're cleared, and it avoids walking across the whole park only to be turned away.
- Animal Kingdom is genuinely excellent for kids who don't meet the 44-inch mark. Between Kilimanjaro Safaris, Na'vi River Journey, Festival of the Lion King, the walking trails, and the new Zootopia show, there's a full day of content with no height worries at all.
- The Kali River Rapids 38-inch cutoff means many kids who can't do Everest or Flight of Passage can still ride something with a splash element.
