Getting There
Carowinds sits at 14523 Carowinds Blvd, Charlotte, NC — right on the North Carolina / South Carolina state line, about 12 miles south of Uptown Charlotte off I-77. Exit 90 is the primary exit from I-77. GPS takes you straight in.
From Charlotte Douglas airport, it's roughly 20 minutes. From Uptown Charlotte, plan 25 minutes without traffic.
Parking
Parking costs $30 per vehicle for standard lots. VIP Parking runs higher and puts you closer to the front gate. Both are cashless — the toll booth takes credit card only, no cash. Prepay online to skip the toll booth line.
When you park, photograph your row. The lot is large and after a full day the walk back is easier when you're not wandering. The Carowinds mobile app has a Car Finder feature that pins your location.
Arrival Strategy
Arrive 20–30 minutes before gates open. Early entry for Season Pass holders and certain tier pass holders starts before general admission. Even without early entry, being first through the gate means a head start on Fury 325 and Afterburn before waits build.
Wednesdays see the shortest waits (average around 11 minutes park-wide) versus Saturdays which average 24 minutes. Any weekday is meaningfully better than a weekend. Summer Saturdays are the worst day to go without a Fast Lane pass.
At the Gate
All bags go through security. They check every bag regardless of size, so a small crossbody or fanny pack keeps you moving faster than a large backpack. The park is cashless inside — cards, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. No cash.
The main entrance drops you into the central midway. Fury 325 is visible immediately to the left-center of the park. The temptation is to head straight for it, but if you can see a line already forming at the entrance, consider hitting Afterburn first (back right of the park) while the Fury queue is heaviest, then loop back.
Lockers
Lockers are near the main entrance and scattered throughout the park. Rates:
- Standard Locker — $20 (daily access, return as many times as you want)
- Large Locker — $25
- Jumbo Locker — $30
- Ride Locker — $4 for 2 hours (for securing your phone for one specific ride)
Most coasters require you to stow loose items. Ride lockers directly at Fury 325 and Copperhead Strike are the most common use case. The daily-rate lockers near the entrance make sense if you have a full bag or stroller gear to store.
What to Ride First
Here's the opening-hour priority order:
1. Fury 325 — Go straight to it at open. The line is shortest in the first 45 minutes.
2. Afterburn — From Fury, cut back to Afterburn before the park fills. The back-of-park location means it loads slower.
3. Copperhead Strike — Mid-morning, before Blue Ridge Junction gets crowded.
4. Thunder Striker — Lines build through the day; hit it when the crowd shifts toward Fury.
5. Camp Snoopy / Carolina Harbor — Afternoon, when the waterpark is busiest but the coaster crowd has thinned.
Meals and Timing
The single most common first-timer mistake is eating at noon. The park's restaurants are slammed from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Eat at 10:45 AM (right after your first two or three rides) or push to 2 PM. Harmony Hall Marketplace near the main entrance is the best all-around food hall option with multiple stations and seating.
The All Day Dining Plan at $32 covers one entree and one side every 90 minutes. If you're staying a full day and plan to eat twice, it pays for itself over buying two meals individually.
What Surprises First-Timers
The heat. Summer in Charlotte is humid and the park has limited shade on the main midway. Bring sunscreen. The park sells it but at park prices. Water bottles are allowed through security (factory-sealed or reusable empties).
The waterpark is included. Carolina Harbor is bundled with park admission. First-timers sometimes don't realize they can walk in and use it without a separate ticket. Bring a change of clothes or plan to dry out in the afternoon sun.
No single rider lines. Carowinds does not operate single rider queues on any attraction. Fast Lane (virtual queue system as of 2026) is the only way to meaningfully shorten wait times.
The park straddles two states. Fury 325's first drop literally crosses the state line. It's a minor novelty but worth knowing.
App and Planning Tools
Download the Carowinds app before you arrive. It shows live wait times, a park map, and the Car Finder feature. It also lets you purchase Fast Lane and dining plans on-site without standing in a line at a ticket window.
