Family Guide to Holiday World: Best Rides for Kids and Parents

Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana earns its reputation as one of the most family-friendly parks in the country. Free parking, free soft drinks all day, free sunscreen at dispensers throughout the park, and a Santa Claus actor available every operating day since the park opened in 1946. But beyond the perks, the real question is how to run the day well with multiple kids at different heights and tolerances. Here's how to do it.

Kids Under 36 Inches

Kids below 36 inches can't board any of the major rides, but Rudolph's Reindeer Ranch is purpose-built for this group. It's located in the Christmas section and contains:

All of these are repeatable without meltdowns. Plan to cycle through them two or three times. The Santa Claus meet-and-greet happens in this area too, which is a legit draw for the 2-5 set.

Doggone Trail is a Jeep ride through wooded terrain with no height minimum and is open to all ages. It's slow, shaded, and a good reset ride between the more stimulating options.

Kids 36-47 Inches

This is the in-between age that requires a split-party strategy if you also have coaster riders in your group. Rides unlocked at 36 inches:

At 42 inches with an adult, Splashin' Safari water coasters (Wildebeest, Mammoth, Cheetah Chase) open up. These are enormous water rides and the wait times can run 45-60 minutes on a peak day, so hit them early.

Kids 48 Inches and Up

Once a kid clears 48 inches, all five major coasters are accessible — Voyage, Raven, Legend, Thunderbird, and Good Gravy! The recommended progression order for a first-timer:

1. Good Gravy! — smoothest and most approachable. Confirm they handle the drops.

2. The Raven — shorter than Voyage, big airtime moments, excellent pacing. Good second step.

3. The Legend — lateral-heavy, runs through the woods. A step up in intensity.

4. Thunderbird — launched steel coaster, zero-to-60 in 3.5 seconds. Very different feel from the woodies. Some kids handle the launch better than the sustained airtime of Voyage.

5. The Voyage — save this for when they're warmed up. 154 feet tall, 6,442 feet of track, 24.3 seconds of airtime. Ride in the back half of the train for the most intense experience.

Splitting the Party

If you have kids under 48 and over 48 in the same group, the easiest strategy is to anchor one adult at Rudolph's Reindeer Ranch while the other takes the older kids to Raven and Legend (both easy to return from quickly). Use the Thanksgiving section as a neutral meeting zone — it's central and has seating near Plymouth Rock Cafe.

Holiday World does not have a formal child swap or rider switch program as of the 2026 guide. Plan your split-party days so both adults get coaster time if needed.

Nap and Reset Strategy

The park is not enormous — you can walk end to end in about 15 minutes. This helps a lot with toddler logistics. The Christmas section (Rudolph's Ranch area) tends to be quieter and shadier than the Fourth of July and Halloween sections. If a toddler is melting down, retreat there.

Free soft drinks are available at fountain stations throughout the park. Keep kids hydrated — this park is in southern Indiana and summer heat is real. Free sunscreen dispensers are positioned near the water park entrance and several other locations.

Character Meets

Santa Claus is present daily in the Christmas section. This is not seasonal — the park is built around the gimmick of being in Santa Claus, Indiana, so he's there year-round during operating hours. Lines are rarely long outside of the Halloween weekend events. For young kids, this meet is the emotional highlight of the day.

Value Summary

One admission price covers both Holiday World and Splashin' Safari. Parking is free. Soft drinks are free. Sunscreen is free. Compared to Six Flags or Cedar Fair parks with the same footprint, Holiday World is significantly cheaper per dollar of actual fun delivered.
