Best Months to Visit Holiday World

May is the single best month for stacking rides at Holiday World, combining warm weather, full park operations, and the lightest queues of the summer season.

The verdict

Holiday World runs a tight seasonal calendar centered on its water park, its coaster lineup, and a pair of beloved holiday events. Attendance typically peaks in August, when the park is running at full capacity with all attractions, dining, and entertainment active. May hits a sweet spot where operations are fully open, the weather is excellent, and modeled crowd levels sit around 17%. Weekdays in May often deliver the highest ride count you can expect all year. If your schedule is flexible, those midweek May days are the target.

Month-by-month

January. The park is closed for the season. A great month to plan your trip, check the operating calendar, and buy tickets early.

February. Still in the off-season. Watch for opening day announcements and seasonal event details dropping this month.

March. Opening month for many parks, and Holiday World's crowd model places March near peak levels, around 16% on average. That's because spring break drives strong attendance from the moment the gates open.

April. A quieter stretch after spring break. Modeled crowd levels dip to around 9% mid-month, which means you're getting solid access to Thunderbird, The Voyage, and the rest of the lineup without the summer rush.

May. Full operations, great weather, and modeled crowds averaging around 17% overall. But the early and middle weeks before Memorial Day weekend typically deliver shorter queues than almost any other point in the operating season.

June. Summer is on. Splashin' Safari opens in full force, school is out across most of the country, and the park buzzes with energy. Expect higher attendance as the month progresses into late June.

July. Peak season. Holiday World is running everything: full ride schedule, live entertainment, Splashin' Safari, and every dining option. This is when the park feels most alive, with guests coming from across the region.

August. The busiest month on the model, with mid-month crowd levels estimated around 35%. Every experience is active and the atmosphere is electric. If you come in August, weekdays and first-hour morning access to The Voyage and Wildebeest will shape your day.

September. One of the most underrated windows. Back-to-school typically pulls attendance down from mid-August through mid-September, and the weather stays warm enough for Splashin' Safari. More rides per hour, still full summer operations.

October. Halloween event season, and Holiday World runs a strong seasonal offering on October weekends. The park takes on a completely different atmosphere. Expect higher Saturday crowds tied to the event, with weekdays offering easier access.

November. Operating schedule narrows toward the end of the season. Check the calendar, but if the park is open, this is typically a low-volume period to enjoy the coaster lineup.

December. Holiday in the Park runs select dates and creates a festive, fully decorated experience. Modeled crowd levels are among the lowest of the year at around 5%, and the event transforms the park into something worth seeing on its own terms.

Special events worth planning around

Halloween season (October weekends). Holiday World's fall event brings themed decor, entertainment, and seasonal programming to the park. The energy on a busy October Saturday is genuinely different from a summer visit. If you want that experience, Saturday nights are when it peaks.

Holiday in the Park (December). Select December dates bring millions of lights, holiday entertainment, and a completely reimagined park atmosphere. Crowd levels are typically low, so you get the event experience with quick access to open attractions.

Opening weekend (late April or May). The first operating days of the year bring an excited crowd of regulars. Sentimental, and still a relatively calm visit compared to peak summer.

Matching your visit style to the season

If you want the highest ride count and the most time in the front of the line, aim for a weekday in April, May, or the first half of September. The full experience is available and the queues move fast.

If you want the park at full voltage, with every show running, every ride operating, every restaurant open, and the energy that comes from a packed summer day, July and August deliver exactly that. Go in with a strategy, hit the headliners early, and the day pays off.

For something different entirely, a December evening at Holiday in the Park is worth building a trip around.
