Planning a Family Day at Carowinds
Carowinds sits on the North Carolina / South Carolina state line just south of Charlotte. It's a full Six Flags property with everything from a 325-foot giga coaster to a toddler splash zone, and that range is both the park's strength and its challenge for families. A family with a 6-year-old and a 12-year-old is going to need to split up at points — there's no way around it. The key is knowing the plan before you walk through the gate.
Camp Snoopy: The Heart of the Kids' Section
Camp Snoopy is where families with young children will spend most of their day. It's a dedicated kids' area in the back corner of the park with multiple kiddie rides, a baby care center, a character greeting room, and the 2025 expansion that added two major new attractions.
Snoopy's Racing Railway is the headline addition. It's a steel launch coaster built by ART Engineering that hits 31 mph on an 804-foot track. Minimum height is 36 inches with a supervising companion. Kids who've never been on a coaster do well here — the launches are smooth and it doesn't invert.
Charlie Brown's River Raft Blast is the other new 2025 ride: an eight-seater raft with onboard and onshore water cannons. Kids 36 inches and up can ride. It's interactive and gets everyone wet, which is great on hot summer days.
The rest of Camp Snoopy includes:
- Woodstock Express (46" min) — junior wooden coaster, the classic starter coaster
- Flying Ace Aerial Chase (40" min) — suspended kids' coaster
- Snoopy vs. Red Baron (36" min) — spinning plane ride
- Beagle Scout Acres — no minimum, small play structure and character appearance area
The character greeting room (indoor, air-conditioned) is where you'll find Snoopy, Woodstock, Charlie Brown, and sometimes Lucy. Lines are rarely long. It's a good place to take a break during the hottest part of the afternoon.
Best Rides for Kids 42"–48"
Once kids hit 42 inches, the options open up meaningfully.
- Boo Blasters on Boo Hill — 42" min. Dark ride shooter with a gun that scores points. Low intensity, perfect for all ages, and one of the longer queue experiences so waits stay manageable.
- White Water Falls — 46" min. Log flume ride. Gets you soaked. Expect a line in summer.
- Wilderness Run — 40" min. Spinning family coaster, mild but fun.
- The Grand Carousel — classic carousel, good for any age with an adult.
- Skytower — 42" min. Observation tower ride, slow ascent with views of both Carolinas.
Best Rides for Kids 48"–52" (The Transition Zone)
This is where the day gets interesting. Kids at 48 inches can start accessing real coasters.
- Rock 'N' Roller — 48" min. Launch coaster that's more manageable than it looks. Good first launched coaster.
- Hurler — 48" min. Wooden coaster. Rougher than the steel options, so skip if your kid is nervous.
- Carolina Cyclone — 48" min. Four inversions, but it's a classic Arrow design so forces are less extreme than modern coasters.
- Copperhead Strike — 52" min. If they're 52 inches, this is the must-do. Two magnetic launches, five inversions, and significantly smoother than anything at the 48" threshold.
What to Skip With Young Kids
- Drop Tower — 52" minimum and a 227-foot free fall. Not appropriate for kids who are borderline on height or nervous.
- Fury 325 — 54" minimum. The top speed and height make this appropriate only for kids who are already comfortable with intense coasters.
- WindSeeker — 54" minimum. The 301-foot swing tower can be distressing even for adults.
- Vortex — 48" minimum, but it's a stand-up coaster. The ride position is unfamiliar and the forces are awkward. Skip it with kids.
Nap and Rest Strategy
Carowinds has limited shaded seating in the main midway, but Camp Snoopy has better shade and benches. The baby care center inside Camp Snoopy has nursing rooms and changing stations.
If you have a napper, plan to leave the park mid-afternoon (1–3 PM) or use the car. There's no on-site hotel attached to the park. Re-entry is allowed with a hand stamp, so a car nap with a return trip is a real strategy.
Split Strategy for Mixed-Age Groups
If you have a mix of short kids and taller kids or adults, designate a meeting spot (the fountain near the main entrance works well) and split up for 90-minute windows. The adults or taller kids hit Fury 325 and Thunder Striker while the little ones do Camp Snoopy. Rotate at a set time and meet for lunch.
The park has a Rider Switch program — one adult waits with the child who can't ride while another rides, then they swap without waiting in line again. Ask the ride operator before you get in the standard queue.
Carolina Harbor for Families
Carolina Harbor waterpark is included with admission and opens when temperatures warrant. For families, Myrtle Turtle Beach (no minimum, zero-entry) and Kiddy Hawk Cove (toddler splash zone) are the draws for little kids. Boogie Board Racer at 42 inches is a crowd-pleaser for older kids who want something faster.
Bring water shoes. The pavement gets hot and the transition zones between water areas have no shade. Rent a locker near the waterpark entrance ($4 for a short-term ride locker) to secure your phone before the splash areas.
