Adventureland in Altoona sits right off I-80 outside Des Moines, and it punches way above its weight for a Midwest park. Lines here are short. On a normal day the average wait is around 10 minutes, and even the headliners peak near 20. That means you can ride the big stuff over and over instead of standing in switchbacks all afternoon. Draken Falls

The newest big draw and usually the longest wait in the park. Draken Falls is a shoot-the-chutes water ride with a genuinely steep drop that soaks the front rows. Ride it midday when it is hot and you will thank yourself. If you want to stay dry, the bridge over the splashdown is the best free show in the park.

The Monster

A steel multi-launch coaster with inversions, a beyond-vertical drop, and a great mix of airtime and hangtime. The Monster is the most modern ride in the lineup and the one enthusiasts drive in for. Back row for the airtime, front row for the visuals. It reliably draws the second-longest wait, so hit it early or grab a night ride.

Phoenix and Sidewinder

Do not skip the older steel. The Phoenix is a looping coaster that still delivers a solid punch, and Sidewinder is a classic Vekoma boomerang that runs you forward and backward through the same inversions. Neither is subtle. Both are short walk-ons most of the day, which makes them perfect for re-rides.

Space Shot

The drop tower that launches you straight up and gives you a real second of float at the top. Quick cycle, quick line, and the view of the whole park on the way up is worth it. Ride it at dusk if you can.

Do not forget the woodies

Adventureland's wooden coasters, the Tornado and the Outlaw, are the heart of the park even if they do not top the wait charts. The Tornado is old-school rough-and-tumble fun, and the Outlaw twists through the trees. Purists will want laps on both.

Timing your day

Because waits stay so low, strategy here is simple. Show up at opening, knock out Draken Falls and The Monster while lines are shortest, then bounce between everything else at your own pace. Afternoons heat up and families arrive, but even peak crowds rarely push a wait past 20 minutes. Save water rides for the hottest part of the day and coasters for the cooler morning and evening hours. You can realistically ride every major attraction twice in one visit, which is not something you can say at most parks.
