How Kennywood's Line System Works
Kennywood does not use Fast Lane (Cedar Fair) or Lightning Lane (Disney). The park's skip-the-line product is called Speedy Pass, and it operates as a virtual queue rather than a physical skip mechanism.
Here is how Speedy Pass works:
1. You purchase Speedy Pass as an add-on to your regular park admission.
2. Using your smartphone, you make a virtual reservation for a specific attraction.
3. A countdown timer shows when it is your turn to board.
4. While you wait virtually, you are free to explore the rest of the park, eat, ride other attractions, or do anything else.
5. When your window arrives, you follow Speedy Pass signage to board at the designated Speedy Pass entrance.
A smartphone with internet access is required. The system is app-based and the reservations are tied to your phone.
Speedy Pass Tiers
There are three Speedy Pass levels, each with a different wait-reduction percentage:
- Elite Speedy Pass — reduces your virtual wait time at popular rides by up to 90%. The Steel Curtain is only included with Elite and Premium levels.
- Premium Speedy Pass — reduces virtual wait times by up to 50%.
- Standard Speedy Pass — allows you to wait virtually (same total wait, but you can be elsewhere while the clock counts down).
Pricing varies by date and is dynamic — busier dates cost more. The park offers a discount when you lock in a specific visit date versus buying a flexible "Any Day" option. Season passholders receive discounts: Platinum Passholders get 20% off Speedy Pass purchases and Gold Passholders get 15% off.
Based on publicly available 2025 pricing information, Speedy Pass add-ons have ranged from approximately $50 to $80+ per person depending on the tier and date. Check the park's website at time of purchase for current rates, as these fluctuate significantly.
When Speedy Pass Is Worth Buying
Speedy Pass delivers real value when:
- You are visiting on a Saturday in July or August, when Steel Curtain and Phantom's Revenge run 60 to 90 minute waits.
- Your group has a specific must-ride list and limited time — one day, four key coasters.
- You have kids who get frustrated waiting. The virtual queue lets them stay busy on smaller rides while the timer counts down.
Speedy Pass is less useful when:
- You are visiting on a weekday in May, June, or September. Weekday wait times at Kennywood are typically 15 to 30 minutes for major rides, and Speedy Pass does not provide enough time savings to justify the cost.
- You arrive at opening and spend the first two hours in the park. The best free line strategy (early arrival) eliminates most of the problem that Speedy Pass solves.
Free Strategies That Actually Work
Arrive at Rope Drop
Kennywood opens at 10:30 AM on most operating days. Guests who are in queue for Phantom's Revenge or Steel Curtain within the first 15 minutes of opening will board in under 10 minutes. By noon, those same rides may have 45 to 60 minute waits. Early arrival is the most powerful free tool available.
Start at the Back
The vast majority of first-time and casual visitors enter the park and head toward the most visible attractions. Kennywood's layout means that Steel Curtain near the entrance draws an immediate crowd. Phantom's Revenge and the Exterminator in the rear of the park start each morning with shorter lines.
Route: Enter, walk straight to the back, ride Phantom's Revenge and Exterminator in the first 45 minutes, then come forward to Steel Curtain. This sequence can yield three major rides with minimal waiting before the park fills.
Ride During Meals
The 12 PM to 1:30 PM window is when wait times spike. That is also when ride lines are at their longest. If you eat early (11 AM) or late (after 2 PM), you can ride major attractions during the window when everyone else is standing in food lines.
End-of-Day Riding
In the final 45 to 60 minutes before park close, wait times drop on most rides. Guests who are in line before closing are typically allowed to ride even if closing time arrives while they are still queued. This is a reliable way to get a final ride on Phantom's Revenge or Steel Curtain with minimal waiting — particularly effective on evenings when the park closes at a set time rather than staying open late for events.
Single Rider Policy
Kennywood does not operate a formal single rider queue at most attractions. This is different from parks like Universal or Cedar Point. There is no dedicated line to exploit for shorter waits as a solo traveler.
The implication: groups of odd numbers and solo visitors ride exactly the same queue as everyone else. There is no line-skip benefit to traveling solo.
Speedy Pass and Steel Curtain
The Steel Curtain inclusion with Elite and Premium Speedy Pass is worth noting because that ride consistently has the longest waits in the park. If your primary goal is Steel Curtain plus Phantom's Revenge without spending 90 minutes in two queues, Elite or Premium Speedy Pass addresses that directly. Standard Speedy Pass does not cover Steel Curtain.
Season Pass Perks
Beyond Speedy Pass discounts, Kennywood season passholders get benefits that effectively reduce per-visit line pressure:
- Early entry on select dates (passholder exclusive hours before general public admission)
- Discounts on parking, dining, and merchandise
- Inclusion in Phantom Fall Fest and Holiday Lights at the Gold/Platinum levels, eliminating the need to buy separate event tickets
If you are visiting twice in a season, a season pass often costs less than two single-day tickets while adding the passholder perks. The math works out for most Pittsburgh-area families.
