Start With the Potato Patch
If you take nothing else from this guide, take this: go to the Potato Patch. It is not hype. Kennywood's flagship fry stand serves fresh-cut Idaho potatoes made to order, and the result is categorically different from the frozen theme park fry that defines every other amusement park in the country. You can taste the difference immediately.
Topping options include:
- Melted cheddar cheese
- Crispy bacon
- Malt vinegar
- Brown gravy
- Cinnamon sugar (sweet option)
- Various seasoning salts
The loaded cheese-and-bacon version is what regulars order. For 2026, the park introduced a pulled pork loaded baked potato variant available on weekends, and loaded maple cinnamon sweet potato waffle fries — both worth trying if you visit during an early-season weekend.
The Potato Patch is in the center of the park and has the longest line of any food location, especially between noon and 2 PM. Arrive before 11 AM or after 3 PM if you want fries without a 30-minute wait.
Beat the Crowds: The 11 AM Strategy
This is the single most impactful dining tip for any Kennywood visit. Every restaurant and quick-service counter in the park floods between noon and 1:30 PM. Guests who eat a proper meal at 11 AM sit down immediately, eat comfortably, and get back on rides while everyone else is standing in food lines.
If you arrive at opening (10:30 AM), do your highest-priority rides first (30 to 45 minutes), then eat at 11. This sequence gives you:
- Shortest ride waits at open
- No food wait at 11
- Refreshed energy for the afternoon rush
Bites and Pints Food and Drink Festival
This is Kennywood's signature summer food event, running every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from late May through July 4th. In 2025, the festival featured eight country-themed stations representing Greece, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, Poland, South Korea, Cuba, and Spain.
How it works:
- Items can be purchased individually or with a Tasting Card (8 or 12 items starting at $54.99)
- Booths open at 4 PM on Fridays and 1 PM on Saturdays and Sundays
- Regular park admission or season pass includes entry to the event; food is purchased separately
- The Tasting Card provides better value than buying items individually if you plan to sample from four or more booths
Bites and Pints is genuinely one of the better food events at a regional amusement park. The menu rotates by theme each year, and the portion sizes at the festival booths are appropriate for sampling multiple stations. Plan your festival visit for a Friday afternoon when the park is less crowded and the booths are freshly stocked.
Key Dining Locations
Potato Patch — the park's landmark. Fresh fries, located centrally. Can also be found in smaller form at a secondary Potato Patch booth near the back of the park.
Kennywood Potato Patch Express — secondary location near the rear of the park for guests who want fries without crossing the park.
Garfield's Grill — burgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs. Solid quick-service option near the main midway.
Parkside Cafe — one of the larger sit-down options in the park. Pizza, pasta, sandwiches. Better for groups that need to sit down.
Pizza Shack — quick-service pizza near the water rides area.
La Paloma — Mexican-style food including tacos and nachos.
Sweets and Treats — funnel cakes, fried Oreos, kettle corn. The deep-fried Oreos are a reliable crowd-pleaser.
Dippin' Dots and Ice Cream — multiple stands throughout the park. In high summer heat, the line for ice cream in the afternoon is consistent. Buy before 1 PM or after 4 PM.
Small Fry's Gluten-Free Options
Kennywood maintains a dedicated section of its dining program for gluten-free guests. Small Fry's is the designated gluten-free option. Staff are trained on cross-contamination protocols, and the menu clearly marks available items. If gluten-free dining is a medical requirement rather than a preference, notify the dining staff and they will walk you through the preparation process.
Meal Deals and Dining Passes
Kennywood sells a Meal Deal add-on that can be purchased with admission. The deal typically includes one meal and one snack from participating locations. The value depends on what you order — if your family would spend $15+ per person on park food, the meal deal usually pays off. Check the current season's Meal Deal inclusions when you purchase tickets, as the participating locations and qualifying items change annually.
What to Skip
The generic midway cart food — cotton candy, pre-packaged items, basic nachos from non-dedicated stands — is fine but offers nothing distinctive. If you have a limited budget for park food, spend it at the Potato Patch and a Bites and Pints booth (during the summer event) rather than on midway staples you could get anywhere.
Bringing Your Own Food
Kennywood permits guests to bring food into the park in soft-sided bags. Outside alcohol is not permitted. This is a useful option for families with dietary restrictions or tight budgets. A packed lunch keeps food costs down without sacrificing park time to an off-site restaurant.
