Six Flags Discovery Kingdom Seasonal Events: What to Know Before You Go
Six Flags Discovery Kingdom runs two major seasonal overlays each year that transform the park into something meaningfully different from a standard operating day. Fright Fest in the fall and WinterFest in late November through early January each add significant content — but they also bring distinct crowd patterns and pricing considerations. Here is what to know before planning around either event.
Fright Fest
What it is: Fright Fest is Six Flags Discovery Kingdom's Halloween event and one of the longest-running seasonal events in the Bay Area. The park converts its midways into horror-themed scare zones after dark, adds multiple haunted mazes, and deploys roaming scare actors throughout the grounds.
2025 dates: Fright Fest 2025 ran on select dates from September 20 through November 2, 2025, primarily Friday through Sunday evenings.
2026 dates: Expect a similar schedule — late September through early November, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The exact 2026 dates are typically announced in late summer. Plan for the window of September 19 to November 1 based on prior year patterns.
What is included:
Fright Fest has evolved significantly in recent years under the "Fright Fest Extreme" branding. The 2025 edition featured haunted mazes themed to licensed horror properties including Saw, The Conjuring Universe, Stranger Things, Army of the Dead, Trick 'r Treat, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The park transforms at dusk — daytime operations run normally, and the Fright Fest experience comes alive in the evening hours.
- Haunted mazes: Separate ticket or Fright Fest bundle typically required for maze access (not included with standard admission)
- Scare zones: Free with park admission, activated throughout the midways after dark
- Roaming scare actors: Free with admission, concentrated in specific zones
- Rides: Most major rides continue to operate during Fright Fest hours
- Shows: Live horror-themed entertainment runs on stage areas throughout the evening
What to expect for crowds: Fright Fest weekends — particularly Saturday nights in October — are among the busiest nights of the year. If you want the maze experience without massive crowds, early-October Friday evenings are the sweet spot: the event is in full swing but hasn't hit peak Halloween-month Saturday traffic yet.
Is it appropriate for kids? The daytime portion of the park during Fright Fest runs normally, and families with young children visiting during afternoon hours will have a standard park experience. Once dusk falls and scare actors activate, the experience shifts significantly. The scare zones and mazes are intended for teenagers and adults. Children who are sensitive to jump scares, horror imagery, or loud startling effects should not be in the park after dark during Fright Fest.
Tickets: Fright Fest nights often require a separate event ticket or upgrade from standard park admission, particularly on peak Saturday nights. Season pass holders typically receive access to the event but may need to purchase maze tickets separately. Check the Six Flags website for the current pricing structure when the event is announced.
WinterFest
What it is: WinterFest debuted at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in 2025 as the park's first major winter holiday event. It replaces the previous Holiday in the Park concept with a significantly expanded holiday overlay.
2025 dates: WinterFest 2025 ran from November 28, 2025 (Thanksgiving weekend) through January 4, 2026.
2026 dates: Expect a similar run from late November through the first week of January. Specific 2026 dates will be announced in fall 2026.
What is included:
The 2025 inaugural event was a notable production by regional theme park standards:
- Approximately 2 million lights and 32 miles of light displays throughout the park
- 50,000 decorations across four themed holiday areas
- A 70-foot Christmas tree in Hometown Square (the main plaza) with nightly lighting ceremonies
- Live holiday shows across multiple stages
- Santa Claus meet and greet
- Holiday shopping vendors
- Cookie decorating and other family activity programming
- Select rides operating in holiday-themed configurations
Most of the light displays, live shows, and select rides are included with park admission. Food, beverages, merchandise, and select premium experiences (like private Santa meet-and-greets) require separate purchase.
Crowd considerations: WinterFest weekends in December draw strong crowds, particularly the weekends surrounding Christmas Day and New Year's Eve. Weekday visits in December outside of the school holiday break (before December 21) are the lightest. Thanksgiving weekend, which is opening weekend, tends to be busy on the Saturday and Sunday but lighter on Thanksgiving Day itself.
What WinterFest replaced: Discovery Kingdom previously ran a smaller Holiday in the Park event. WinterFest is a full scale-up from that predecessor — more lights, more programming, and a longer run. If you visited during prior Holiday in the Park years, expect a noticeably larger production.
Summer Operations
Beyond Fright Fest and WinterFest, the park's summer season (June through August) includes extended operating hours on weekends and special event weekends tied to regional concerts or promotional partnerships. Check the park calendar when planning summer visits, as some weekend events add gate pricing or require separate tickets for specific programming. The animal shows run on full schedules during summer and remain one of the park's most consistent draws during regular operations.
