What Kind of Park Is Elitch Gardens?

Elitch Gardens is Denver's only major theme park, and it's been operating since 1890 — making it one of the oldest amusement parks in the country still running. The current location opened in 1995 after the park relocated from its original site in northwest Denver. It sits on roughly 68 acres in the River Mile development district near downtown, which means you can see the downtown skyline from most of the park.

The park divides into two halves: the theme park with coasters and flat rides, and Island Kingdom, a 20-acre water park. Both are included with standard admission. You'll need to budget a full day to hit both.

Getting There and Parking

Elitch Gardens is at 2000 Elitch Circle in Denver, easily visible from I-25. Parking is in a dedicated lot directly next to the entrance.

Parking prices: Buying parking online in advance gets you the best rate. On-site purchase at the toll plaza runs $25–$35 depending on the day of the week (weekends are more expensive). Online pre-purchase saves $5–$10 and reduces the line at the parking entrance. Skip the VIP parking upgrade — it doesn't get you materially closer to the gate.

Accessible parking spots are directly adjacent to the main entrance.

If you're coming from downtown Denver, Lyft and Uber drop-off/pickup is available near the entrance — worth considering on busy weekend days when the parking lot queue backs up.

What to Do First

Step one: Go to Guest Services. It's located near the main entrance by the carousel. Pick up a printed park map and ask for the current accessibility guide if you need one. This is also where you get a Ride Access Pass if anyone in your group needs one.

Step two: Hit the main coasters immediately. Twister II, Sidewinder, and the other 48"+ thrill rides have their shortest lines in the first 90 minutes after open. By 11 am they're already building. By 1 pm on a summer Saturday, expect 45–60 minute waits on Twister II.

Step three: Island Kingdom in the afternoon. Water park lines peak around noon. By 2 pm they've distributed. After 3 pm, lines at the water park are very manageable. This also solves the heat problem — Denver afternoons in summer routinely hit 90°F and the water park is the most comfortable place to be.

The Midday Trap

Noon to 2 pm is the worst time at Elitch Gardens. Main coaster lines are at their longest, the exposed midway areas are baking, and the food stands are slammed. Three options:

1. Eat early — Lunch at 11 am before the rush hits the dining areas.

2. Hit the water park — Island Kingdom is the natural midday refuge.

3. Use covered shade areas — KiddieLand has shade structures and is less overwhelmed midday than the main coaster section.

What to Bring

Lockers

Loose articles aren't allowed on most major rides. Lockers at the main gate and water park entrance are day-use, take both card and cash, and are your best bet for phones, bags, and anything you don't want to carry around. The water park lockers are available only during Island Kingdom operating hours.

Buying Tickets

Always buy tickets online before you go. Gate prices are significantly higher than online prices. If you plan to visit more than twice in a season, the season pass math works out quickly — season passes include parking discounts and a dining plan add-on option.
