What Dorney Park Actually Is
Dorney Park is a regional amusement park in Allentown, Pennsylvania, roughly 90 minutes from Philadelphia and 90 minutes from New York City. It's owned by Six Flags and sits on about 200 acres, which includes Wildwater Kingdom, a separate water park that's included with regular admission. The park runs eight roller coasters, a full lineup of flat rides, a kids area (Planet Snoopy), and the water park. It's a one-day park — you can do the highlights in 6-8 hours, and a full day covers everything twice if crowds cooperate.
When to Go
The best days to visit are Tuesday through Thursday during the main summer season. Weekends in July bring the heaviest crowds, particularly for Iron Menace and Talon. If you're visiting on a weekend, arrive 30 minutes before the published opening time.
Mid-September through October is an underrated time to visit. The park runs Tricks & Treats on weekends — a family daytime Halloween event — and on weekday non-haunt days the park is nearly empty. Halloween Haunt (the separate nighttime scare event) runs Friday and Saturday nights starting in mid-September, which means those nights pack the park with a different audience.
Arrival and Parking
Parking runs $30 for regular, $40 for preferred (closer spots). There's no reservation system for parking; it's first come, first served. On busy days, preferred fills by 10:30am.
Use the Dorney Park app to save your parking spot location before you walk away from the car. It sounds minor but the lots are large and disorienting to navigate back to after a full day.
The main entrance is on Dorney Park Road in Allentown. GPS is reliable to the lot. Once parked, the walk to the main gate is short from preferred lots — maybe 5 minutes.
Tickets and Entry
Buy tickets online before you arrive. Gate pricing is consistently higher, sometimes significantly, compared to online pricing. Six Flags membership and season passes include Dorney Park access (2026 Gold Pass covers 8 parks including Great Adventure and Dorney Park). Check the Six Flags website before your visit since pass coverage changes year to year.
Once inside, pick up a paper map at the gate or download the app. The park layout is a loop with Planet Snoopy on one end and Iron Menace near the front. Most first-timers make the mistake of wandering toward whatever they see first — the better move is to head immediately to the back of the park and work your way toward the front as the day progresses.
The Order to Ride Things
First 90 minutes of the day:
1. Head straight to Iron Menace — it draws the longest lines and they build fast after 11am.
2. Walk to Talon while you're in the back half of the park.
3. Hit Steel Force on your way toward the middle.
Mid-morning:
- Hydra the Revenge and Possessed both sit in areas with lower foot traffic — ride them before lunch.
- Demon Drop almost never has a meaningful line. Ride it anytime.
Lunch before noon:
- Dining waits explode between 12:00 and 1:30pm. Eat at 11:30 if possible.
Afternoon:
- Water park if it's hot. Wildwater Kingdom opens on a separate schedule (check the app) but is typically open May through Labor Day.
- Planet Snoopy for families with young kids — lines in the kids area peak in the afternoon.
Lockers
Lockers are available near the main entrance and near major coasters. Most coasters require you to either leave belongings with a non-rider or use the paid lockers at the ride entrance. Bring a small bag that you're comfortable leaving in a bin while you ride, or budget for locker fees on the bigger coasters.
What Surprises First-Timers
- The water park is free. Wildwater Kingdom is included with admission. Many first-timers don't know this and don't bring a bathing suit.
- Demon Drop is rarer than it looks. The freefall tower at the back of the park is one of the last of its kind in North America. Ride it on principle.
- The park is walkable in size. Unlike Six Flags Great Adventure or Kings Dominion, Dorney Park is compact enough that walking between opposite ends takes under 10 minutes.
- Thunderhawk gets rough by mid-afternoon. The 1923 wooden coaster rides noticeably differently in the afternoon heat. Ride it in the morning if you're sensitive to roughness.
Mistakes to Avoid
- Arriving at opening time instead of before it on busy days
- Skipping the water park because you didn't pack a suit
- Eating lunch between noon and 1pm
- Spending the first two hours in Planet Snoopy if you have older kids who can ride the main coasters — the window for short Iron Menace waits closes fast
- Assuming Fast Lane is too expensive without checking day-of pricing; on busy days it can be worth it for the top three coasters alone
