Family Guide to Knott's Berry Farm: Best Rides for Kids and Parents
Knott's Berry Farm is one of the most family-capable parks in Southern California — if you know how to use it. The park has a dedicated 6-acre kids zone, a solid lineup of family coasters, and enough adult thrills that parents don't spend the day on the sidelines. The key is knowing what's right for each age group and building a day around that.
For Toddlers and Preschoolers (Under 36")
Camp Snoopy is the destination. Nearly everything here is built for the under-36" crowd and every ride has Peanuts theming.
- Beagle Express Railroad — A slow-moving train that winds through Camp Snoopy with Snoopy and the gang at every turn. Toddlers love it. Parents can rest.
- Charlie Brown's Kite Flyer — A gentle swing ride that lets tiny kids experience the feeling of soaring without any real height or speed.
- Camp Bus — A bouncing vehicle ride. Low-key, toddler-approved.
- Red Baron — Biplane spinner, soft and predictable. A good first "ride in a vehicle" experience for 2-3 year olds.
- Camp Snoopy Jamboree — A second train loop deeper into Camp Snoopy. Good for re-riders.
Character meets with Snoopy, Charlie Brown, and the Peanuts gang happen throughout the day in Camp Snoopy. Check the daily schedule at Guest Services when you arrive — lines are shortest right when characters first appear.
For Early Elementary (36"–47")
This is where things open up significantly. A 36" rider can access the log ride with a companion, the Calico Mine Ride, and Camp Snoopy's bigger attractions.
- Timber Mountain Log Ride — One of the best log rides in the country. A 36" child can ride with a supervising companion. The final drop is real, so assess your kid's tolerance first.
- Calico Mine Ride — A slow-moving dark ride through an animatronic gold mine. The darkness surprises some young kids, but most love it. One of the park's hidden gems for this age group.
- Snoopy's Tenderpaw Twister Coaster — The newest Camp Snoopy ride. A real roller coaster at 42" solo or 36" with a companion. A great first coaster moment.
- Timberline Twister — A spinning coaster in Camp Snoopy with real lateral movement. Kids who've done basic coasters will love it.
- Balloon Race — 36" minimum. A gentle rotating balloon ride with good views of the camp.
- Jaguar! — At 48", this is just out of reach for the 36"–47" group, but it's the first coaster to consider when your child clears that milestone.
For Bigger Kids and Tweens (48")
At 48", a huge portion of the park unlocks all at once. This is the age group Knott's is arguably best suited for.
- Jaguar! — A winding coaster with dips and turns but no inversions. A strong first "real coaster" ride.
- Pony Express — A horse-style launch coaster. Smooth and fast, feels unique, good for kids building coaster confidence.
- GhostRider — Knott's signature wooden coaster. Rough and loud and genuinely exciting. Most 48" tweens can handle this with no problem.
- HangTime — Inverted dive coaster. The holding pause at the top before the drop is legitimately scary in a fun way. Kids who liked GhostRider should try this next.
- Sierra Sidewinder — A spinning coaster with real unpredictability. Each ride is different because the cars rotate freely.
- Bigfoot Rapids — A guaranteed soak. Wear clothes you don't mind getting completely wet or rent a locker for your dry stuff.
For Parents Without Little Kids
- Silver Bullet — The full inverted coaster experience. Six inversions, runs smooth, and the over-Fiesta-Village-lagoon section is excellent.
- Xcelerator — 0 to 82 mph in 2.3 seconds. The fastest ride at the park and one of the best hydraulic-launch coasters anywhere.
Nap and Rest Strategy
If you're visiting with toddlers, plan for a midday break. The park is in Buena Park with several hotel options a five-minute walk away. A car nap in the parking lot is also a legitimate move — re-entry is allowed on the same day. The Baby Care Center near the park entrance has a private nursing area, changing tables, and a microwave for warming bottles.
Stroller parking is designated near most Camp Snoopy rides. Bring your own stroller — rentals are available but run out on busy days. Rental strollers are also not allowed on most rides, so you'd need to park them anyway.
Rider Switch Policy
Knott's offers a Rider Switch (also called Child Swap or Parent Swap) at most rides with height restrictions. One adult rides while the other stays with the child who can't ride, then they swap without both adults waiting in line twice. Ask any ride operator at the entrance to set this up — it's not always posted.
What to Skip with Young Kids
- Xcelerator — Even if your older child clears 52", assess whether they're genuinely ready for a hydraulic launch. It's extreme.
- Scarier dark ride elements — Calico Mine Ride has dark sections that surprise some kids under 5.
- Weekends during Scary Farm season (September–November) — The park itself doesn't become a haunted event during daytime, but décor starts appearing in fall and some kids find it unsettling.
Character Meets
Snoopy and friends appear exclusively in Camp Snoopy and sometimes in Ghost Town during special events. There's no formal character breakfast at Knott's, but the camp meet-and-greet area near the Beagle Express Railroad has shorter lines than Disney's character queues by a significant margin. Aim for first thing in the morning or 30 minutes before park close.
