Family Guide to Kings Dominion: Best Rides for Kids and Parents
Kings Dominion sits about 20 miles north of Richmond off I-95, and it's a genuine multi-generation park — not just a coaster park that happens to have a kids' area bolted on. Planet Snoopy alone is 14 acres with more than 15 rides, and Soak City water park is included with admission. With some planning, a family with kids ranging from toddlers to teens can have a full day without anyone sitting on a bench.
For Toddlers and Young Kids (Under 42")
Planet Snoopy is the destination for this age group. It sits in the far left section of the park from the main entrance and is worth heading to first before it gets crowded mid-morning.
Best rides in Planet Snoopy:
- Snoopy's Junction — a kid-sized steam train loop with Snoopy and Woodstock theming; no height minimum, smooth ride
- Beagle Scout Acres — multi-level splash pad and playground area; bring a change of clothes
- Peanuts 500 — small kiddie car ride; no height minimum
- Sally's Sea Plane — gentle up-and-down airplane ride
The Planet Snoopy Family Care Center is next to the restrooms in the area. It has a private nursing room, a microwave for warming bottles, and a changing table. That detail alone makes a difference for families with infants.
Outside Planet Snoopy, Boo Blasters on Boo Hill is a dark ride shooter — no height requirement, completely enclosed, and a good break from the heat. Kids love competing on the score.
For Grade-Schoolers (42" to 47")
This is when the park opens up significantly. Kids who clear 42" can now add:
- Grizzly — classic wooden coaster in the back corner of the park; good first big coaster
- Racer 75 — twin racing coasters; ask a ride operator which side tends to win
- Avalanche — bobsled-style coaster with no inversions; smooth and fun
- White Water Canyon — six-person raft ride, about 4 minutes, everyone gets soaked
- Shenandoah Lumber Co. — log flume with a big final drop; good heat relief
- Great Pumpkin Coaster — gentle coaster in Planet Snoopy for kids 36" and up
Parent tip: If you have one adult who wants to ride the big coasters, use Rider Swap at every ride. One adult waits with the younger kids, one rides, then they swap immediately without rejoining the line. It's available at every coaster and costs nothing.
For Tweens and Teens (48" and up)
At 48" the park's main lineup becomes accessible:
- Rapterra — the 2025 headliner; world's tallest launched wing coaster at 145 feet; hits 65 mph in 4 seconds
- Twisted Timbers — hybrid RMC coaster; widely considered the second-best ride in the park
- Backlot Stunt Coaster — launched coaster that's slightly less intense; good gateway to the bigger rides
- Delirium — giant pendulum swing; thrilling but not disorienting
- Anaconda — traditional Arrow looper over the lake; classic but rough
Twins at 48" who want to ride Pantherian will have to wait until 54". That ride does a 300-foot 85-degree drop and pulls significant G-forces. It's not a good first big coaster.
Nap and Rest Strategy
The park does not have a designated nap area, but there are benches inside Planet Snoopy near the shade structures. Families often use strollers as a nap station — the park has stroller parking at ride entrances.
The quietest mid-day window for adult coasters is typically 1–3 PM when families with young kids cycle through Soak City. If your kids go down for a rest or want to do the water park, one adult can hit Twisted Timbers and Rapterra with minimal waits during that window.
Character Meets
Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Lucy, Woodstock, and other PEANUTS characters make scheduled appearances in Planet Snoopy. Times are posted on the Kings Dominion app. Morning appearances (typically 10–11 AM) have the shortest character meet queues before the park gets busy.
Soak City for Families
Soak City is a separate 20-acre water park included with park admission. The Coconut Shores area has a 45-foot multi-level play structure, a mini wave pool, and flat-water play areas with no height requirement. The lazy river is manageable with young kids. Most slide towers require 42"–48".
Bring water shoes. The pavement gets hot by midday and towels don't count as footwear on the slide stairs.
What to Skip With Young Kids
- The midway games near the main plaza — they're expensive and positioned to catch excited kids walking by
- The Eiffel Tower elevator has a wait but the view is worth it once, not twice
- Avoid trying to squeeze in a Soak City visit AND all of Planet Snoopy in one day with kids under 5 — pick one and do it well
