Dollywood has quietly assembled one of the best coaster lineups in America, wrapped in Smoky Mountain scenery and served with cinnamon bread. Nine coasters, at least four of them elite, and not a single filler ride among the majors. Here is every coaster ranked.
1. Lightning Rod
An RMC hybrid themed to a hot rod, and when it is running, the best ride in the state. After years as a temperamental launched coaster it now climbs a traditional lift, which cost it some novelty and bought it reliability.
- Ride experience: a 165 foot drop off the mountainside into a layout that never lets up, ending in the famous quadruple down, four back-to-back airtime hits at highway speed. Ejector airtime everywhere.
- Height requirement: 48 inches
- Best seat: back row, no debate. The quad down pulls the back car over each edge.
- Best time to ride: first thing. Our wait data has it averaging about 10 minutes, but that number hides its habit of late openings. If it is running at rope drop, go immediately.
2. Wild Eagle
A B&M wing coaster perched 21 stories above the valley floor, with nothing above or below you.
- Ride experience: graceful and glassy smooth: a huge first drop, four inversions, and genuine sense of flight. The Smokies views from the lift are the best in the park.
- Height requirement: 50 inches
- Best seat: far left front for the full wing effect. Left and right ride differently, so do both.
- Best time to ride: dusk, when the valley lights up. Waits stay modest most days.
3. Thunderhead
A GCI wooden twister built into a hollow, still one of the best wooden coasters anywhere.
- Ride experience: relentless direction changes, sneaky airtime, and a station fly-through that remains one of the great moments in coaster design.
- Height requirement: 48 inches
- Best seat: back row at night.
- Best time to ride: evening. It averages just 7 minutes in our data, the shortest wait of any major coaster here.
4. Mystery Mine
A Gerstlauer mine ride with vertical lifts, beyond-vertical drops, and a dark ride's sense of dread. Recent retracking smoothed the once punishing finale.
- Ride experience: claustrophobic indoor sections, a 95 degree drop, and fire effects. Weird in the best way.
- Height requirement: 48 inches
- Best seat: front row for the drops.
- Best time to ride: midday, when its indoor sections double as air conditioning.
5. Big Bear Mountain
The park's family-thrill bridge and its longest coaster, with multiple launches and onboard audio.
- Ride experience: swooping terrain turns, tunnels, a waterfall pass, and a soundtrack narrated by a bear-hunting guide.
- Height requirement: 39 inches
- Best seat: back half for launch pull.
- Best time to ride: early. It averages 11 minutes, among the longest waits in the park, because every family rides it.
6. Tennessee Tornado
The last great Arrow looper, and the smoothest one they ever built.
- Ride experience: a drop through a mountain tunnel into a giant loop sequence. Short, forceful, walk-on most days.
- Height requirement: 48 inches
- Best seat: front for the tunnel dive.
7. FireChaser Express
A family launch coaster that goes forward, then backward, with a fireworks finale. Averages 14.6 minutes in our data, the longest coaster wait in the park, so ride at opening or after dinner. 39 inch minimum.
8. Dragonflier
A suspended family coaster over Wildwood Grove that swoops more than it should for a 39 inch requirement. Averages about 11 minutes; hit it while families are at lunch.
9. Blazing Fury
An indoor coaster-dark ride hybrid from 1978 with three small drops and endless charm. Air conditioned, nearly no wait, deeply weird. Ride it.
