First-Timer's Guide to Kings Dominion: Everything You Need to Know
Kings Dominion sits in Doswell, Virginia — about 20 miles north of Richmond on I-95, exit 98. The address is 16000 Theme Park Way. GPS gets you there without issue. The drive from DC is around 1.5 hours, from Virginia Beach about 2 hours.
Buying Tickets: Do It Before You Get There
Buying at the gate costs more than buying online. Check the official Kings Dominion website first, then look at Costco (members often save $20–30 off the online price) and AAA. Groupon occasionally has deals but read the fine print — some Groupon tickets exclude peak dates or seasonal events.
Kings Dominion now falls under the Six Flags umbrella following a 2024 acquisition, so Six Flags members and pass holders should check cross-park benefits.
Parking
Parking is $25 for standard and $35 for preferred (closer spots). The lot is large. Standard parking means a walk — not unreasonable, but if you have young kids or heavy gear, preferred is worth the extra $10.
A limited number of disability-accessible spaces are available near the main entrance on a first-come basis. These are not reservable in advance.
The lot fills from the center outward. Arriving before 10 AM on weekends gets you a reasonable standard spot. Arriving after noon on a summer Saturday means walking from the edges.
When to Arrive
The park opens at 10 AM most days. Gate lines are shortest in the first 30 minutes of operation. Once the park has been open 90 minutes, the premium coaster lines (Rapterra, Pantherian, Twisted Timbers) are at their longest point of the day.
The inverse is also true: those same coasters are at their shortest waits in the final 90 minutes before closing. If you can stay late, save the headliners for 7–8 PM.
The Kings Dominion App
Download the official app before you arrive. It shows live wait times for every ride, an interactive map, dining locations, and a car finder tool for the parking lot. The wait time data is legitimately useful — check it when you're deciding whether to stay in a queue or walk to another ride.
The app also shows character meet times in Planet Snoopy, which change daily.
Payment
The park is fully cashless. Every transaction uses a credit card, debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay. There are no ATMs inside the park for withdrawing cash to spend. If anyone in your group only carries cash, exchange for a prepaid debit card before arrival.
Lockers
Lockers rent for $13/day. Location: near the main entrance. Many of the major coasters — particularly Rapterra and Pantherian — require you to secure loose articles before boarding. Free small cubbies exist at ride entrances for phones and sunglasses, but they're not secured. If you're carrying a bag, a park locker makes sense.
Practical alternative: a small backpack with a zipper that you hand off to a non-rider in your group. Most families do this rather than pay for a locker.
What to Bring
- Sunscreen — reapply; the midway areas have almost no shade
- Refillable water bottle — the park allows refills at fountains throughout
- Closed-toe shoes if anyone is riding the major coasters (sandals are not allowed on many rides)
- Change of clothes if you're doing White Water Canyon or Soak City
- Phone charger/battery bank — the app drains your battery
The Must-Ride List for First-Timers
If you only have one day, prioritize these in order:
1. Rapterra (first thing in the morning, before the line builds)
2. Twisted Timbers (also early — it's in the back of the park)
3. Pantherian (54" minimum — incredible if you qualify)
4. White Water Canyon (mid-day heat relief)
5. Dominator (floorless coaster, surprisingly re-rideable)
6. Grizzly and Reptilian (back corner — pair them, minimal wait)
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Skipping the app. People waste 30–40 minutes walking to a coaster with a 60-minute line when a 5-minute check would've sent them somewhere with a 10-minute wait.
Going to Planet Snoopy last. Kids' energy is highest in the morning. Flip the order — Planet Snoopy first, then transition to family rides, then free the adults for the big coasters later in the day.
Doing Soak City AND the full park in one day. Soak City is 20 acres of water park. If you try to do both on the same visit, you'll do neither well. Families with young kids often spend the entire day in Soak City. Consider two separate visits if you have a pass.
Eating lunch at noon. Lines at every restaurant peak from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM. Eat at 11 AM or 2 PM and you'll walk right in.
Chaperone Policy for 2026
As of 2026, guests 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or adult chaperone to enter the park. If you're sending teenagers alone, verify the current policy on the Kings Dominion website before the visit — the chaperone age requirement and ratio details are posted there.
