Universal Islands of Adventure Accessibility Guide
A common point of confusion for guests transitioning from Disney: Universal does not use the DAS (Disability Access Service) program. That program is Disney-specific. Universal's equivalent is called the Attraction Assistance Pass (AAP), and the process for obtaining it changed meaningfully in 2025.
The Attraction Assistance Pass (AAP)
The AAP is Universal's accommodation for guests whose disabilities prevent them from waiting in a standard standby queue. When you have an AAP, you are given a return time for each attraction equivalent to the current standby wait, then re-enter through an alternate entrance when that time arrives — similar in concept to Disney's Lightning Lane, but without paying for the access.
What Changed in 2025
Universal updated its AAP eligibility criteria in fall 2025, narrowing the qualification standards and requiring documentation for most requests. The process now runs through the IBCCES Individual Accessibility Card (IAC).
How to Get the IBCCES IAC
1. Register at accessibilitycard.org or download the IBCCES Accessibility Card app (available on iOS and Google Play)
2. Submit documentation from a medical professional, licensed therapist, or school system describing your disability and the accommodations needed
3. Apply at least 48 hours before your visit (30 days out is better to allow processing time)
4. The IAC is free to obtain and valid for one year
After approval, a Universal team member will contact you to discuss what specific accommodations are available before your visit. If no one contacts you in a timely window, call Universal Guest Services directly at 407-224-4233.
At the Park
Bring your IAC and your case number to Guest Services near the park entrance on the day of your visit. A team member will issue the physical AAP card there. Note that the IAC is documentation — it does not guarantee any specific accommodation. Universal determines the actual accommodation during the contact call or at the park.
Digital AAP
As of late 2025, Universal was testing a digital version of the AAP card. If it has rolled out fully by your visit, a team member at Guest Services can advise on whether you use the physical card or a digital equivalent in the Universal app.
Wheelchair and ECV Rentals
Manual wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs) are available for rent near the Islands of Adventure entrance:
- Manual wheelchair: approximately $15/day
- ECV (motorized scooter): approximately $75/day
- Canopy ECV: slightly higher; the canopy adds sun protection
All rentals are available on a first-come basis and cannot be reserved in advance. If you are visiting on a busy day, arrive early. ECVs run out before wheelchairs do.
Important: ECVs and motorized wheelchairs cannot be taken on most rides. At the attraction entrance, you transfer to a manual wheelchair provided by the park (or walk to the accessible boarding area). Your ECV is held at the entrance and returned when you exit.
Ride Accessibility at Islands of Adventure
All attraction queues at Islands of Adventure are accessible to guests using manual wheelchairs. Not all queues accommodate ECVs — guests on an ECV will be provided a manual chair at the ride entrance if needed.
The one exception is Pteranodon Flyers, which is not accessible to guests using any wheelchair due to the boarding configuration.
Forbidden Journey has physical seat dimensions that may restrict guests of larger body size or those with certain mobility aids. A physical ride vehicle test seat is available at the attraction entrance before you wait in queue — always use it if there is any question.
Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure offers multiple seating configurations (motorbike seat and sidecar). The sidecar may be more accessible for some guests; ask a team member at the entrance about options.
Hearing Accessibility
- Assistive Listening Systems (ALS) are available at select shows and attractions — ask at Guest Services for a device and a map of which attractions support it
- Most shows have a sign language interpretation schedule available on request; Guest Services can provide dates and times
- Reflective captioning is available at select attractions
Visual Accessibility
- Audio description devices are available from Guest Services
- Braille and large-print versions of park maps are available at the main Guest Services location
Sensory Considerations
Hogwarts and several rides include sudden loud effects, strobe lighting, and rapidly changing projection environments. The Forbidden Journey and Spider-Man rides both use moving enclosed vehicles with screen-based imagery that can cause motion discomfort. The Universal app and the park's printed accessibility guide both note specific sensory elements for each attraction.
Service animals are permitted throughout the park with the exception of several ride vehicles. A Relief Area for service animals is located near the park entrance — Guest Services can provide an exact location map.
Guest Services Location
Guest Services is located just inside the main entrance to Islands of Adventure on the left side as you walk in from CityWalk. Open park hours; no appointment required for most requests.
